From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8 In this independent sequel to The Song of Pentecost (Dutton, 1983), the latest mouse to earn the title Pentecost feels that he'll never earn the love and respect given the late great adventurer who last held the title. And so he mopes, ignoring his family until a prophetic badger foretells a great adventure in which Pentecost will go to the old city and overthrow a tyrant with the help of another mouse called the Chosen mouse. With his friend Fox, Pentecost ventures to the city only to suffer terrible hardship. Separated from Fox, he falls in with a mob of city mice whose leader wants to kill him, but Pentecost shows his mettle when he defends an accused mouse and through adversity learns humility. Meanwhile Fox mistakenly carries the Chosen mouse to Pentecost's country home, where that vain and worthless mouse also learns a few lessons about himself. When Fox and the Chosen mouse return to the city, they rescue Pentecost, overthrow the evil leader of the mob, and establish the Chosen mouse as the new leader. Pentecost returns home a wiser mouse, content with his fate. Children will enjoy the humor and adventure found here, although they will probably miss the significance of much of Corbett's commentary on the human condition. While the plot development and charactizeration are only fair, and this story is not another Watership Down (Macmillan, 1974) , fans of the first book should enjoy it. From Publishers Weekly

The British author resumes the story he began in the award-winning The Song of Pentecost, which ended with the death of the heroic mouse. Young Pentecost lacks his father's abilityhe led the displaced mice to a home on Lickey Top. Faced by Uncle, who is trying to take charge of the band, Pentecost dithers on until wily Fox takes a hand. Unwillingly, the mouse travels far, to the city where he meets the Chosen One, a leader beset by conspiracies in his mice band. Tense, funny and moving situations abound in Corbett's enchanting allegory. Lickey Top's fractious Owl, Old Codger and Son (possums), the Iago-like Cockle Snorkle (a bug) and all the believable anthropomorphs are visible in Ursell's expert illustrations. All ages.
