Gr. 2-4. In her Native American Trickster Tales series, which began with stories about Coyote, Mayo now introduces Rabbit, a character who appears in tales across North America. These five stories show Rabbit in one fix after another but always conniving and contriving to come out on top. In the informative afterword "Who Is Rabbit?" scholar Jay Miller notes that "in life, as in trickster tales, small and harmless does not mean incapable." Mayo illustrates the stories with small acrylic paintings notable for their blocks of muted colors and distinctive use of line. Brief notes appear at the end of each tale, and the book ends with source notes. An appealing collection of Native American tales for independent reading or for reading aloud. Carolyn Phelan
