A story for baseball lovers and fans of Mike Lupica and Tim Green!
Hal has to get out from under his father’s shadow. Hal Stevens has always been compared to his father, a superstar third baseman and power hitter. But Hal doesn’t have his father’s build and strength. When his new baseball coach moves him to second base and hands him a lighter bat, Hal discovers his real abilities—and finds himself faced with an angry second baseman, who is sure Hal got the spot because of his father. Can Hal prove him wrong?
“Baseball fans will love the play-by-play descriptions of games, and Hal’s struggles . . . will appeal to an even wider audience.”—Booklist

Thomas J. Dygard (August 10, 1931 - October 5, 1996) was an American journalist an author of sports novels for young readers. His best-known titles include: Second Stringer (football), The Rookie Arrives (baseball), Outside Shooter (basketball), Soccer Duel (soccer), Wilderness Peril (camping, hiking).
Grade 6-10?Hoping to find friends and a place for himself in his new school, Hal Stevens joins the baseball team. His father is a former major-league third baseman?a fact that Hal wants to keep to himself?and he wants to play the same position. However, he ends up at second base, which is more suited to his skills. He is fearful that his dad will be upset, but, as it turns out, the man recognizes the wisdom of the move. Also, Hal finds that only one of his teammates begrudges him his famous father. By some diplomatic maneuvering, he's able to bring this recalcitrant player around, and the novel ends with the exciting prospect of a season getting under way. As usual, Dygard is right on target with his sports details. He also manages to give readers a winning portrait of the main character, who is shown coping with a new school and coming to terms with his illustrious parent. A solid sports novel with some effective extras thrown in.?Todd Morning, Schaumburg Township Public Library, IL
