9780140421354: Selected poems (Penguin modern European poets)

Synopsis

Cesare Pavese was born in 1908 in Santo Stefano Belbo, a village in the hills of Piedmont. He worked as a translator (of Melville, Joyce and Faulkner) and as an editor for the publishing house Einaudi Editore, while also publishing his own poetry and a string of successful novels, including The House on the Hill and The Moon and the Bonfires. Never actively anti-Fascist himself, he was nevertheless sent into internal exile in Calabria in 1935 for having aided other subversives. He killed himself in 1950, shortly after receiving Italy’s most prestigious literary prize, the Strega.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Middlesex. Penguin Books Ltd. 1971. First printing in this Penguin edition. A title in the Penguin Modern European Poets series. Soft Covers. Standard paperback size. 138 pp. Toning to the text block but clean and unmarked. Spine a little creased and light wear to the covers. Very Good. Edited, translated and with a foreword by Margaret Crosland. Cesare Pavese is often referred to as one of the most influential Italian writers of his time. Pavese moved in antifascist circles. In 1935 he was arrested and convicted for having letters from a political prisoner. After World War II, he joined the Italian Communist Party and worked on the party's newspaper, L'Unità. Depression, the failure of a brief love affair with the actress Constance Dowling, were dedicated, and political disillusionment led him to his suicide by an overdose of barbiturates in 1950. Leslie Fiedler wrote of Pavese's death ".for the Italians, his death has come to have a weight like that of Hart Crane for us, a meaning that penetrates back into his own work and functions as a symbol in the literature of an age." The circumstances of his suicide, which took place in a hotel room, mimic the last scene of Tra Donne Sole (Among Women Only), his penultimate book. Seller Inventory # 2315APR011

Penguin Modern European Poets series - Penguin Catalogue No. D135 - published as a paperback original (PBO) on 30th Sep 1971. ***First printing of the first UK paperback edition, with Foreword by the translator Margaret Crosland. The book was originally published in hardback, with slightly different content, in the UK by Peter Owen in 1969, under the title "A Mania for Solitude Selected Poems 1930-1950". ***Near fine in colour illustrated thin card covers, with the printed price scratched out on the back cover. The covers have some light edge wear and rubbing commensurate with age and handling, but there are no serious creases or tears - just slight creasing to the top corner tips of the last few pages. There are some handling marks to the back cover which is white. The spine is unfaded and clean, with some rubbing at the edges, but with no reading creases. Page block edges clean. Internally also near fine, with no inscriptions or annotations. Paper stock lightly tanned but pages clean. Spine tight. Covers bright. ***180mm x 108mm. 144 pages including a section of Notes at the back of the book. ***'Cesare Pavese committed suicide in 1950, at the height of his literary career. Famous as a novelist, he will also be remembered for his sympathetic poetry, which evokes traditional, timeless Italian life and expresses profound disquiet at the encroachment of soulless urbanization. This collection illustrates his deepening preoccupation with man's isolation and includes two of his most important essays on poetry. This series now includes selected work by the following poets, in verse translations by, among others, W. H. Auden, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Michael Hanburger, Ted Hughes, J. B. Leishman, Christopher Middleton and David Wevill: Akhmatova, Amichai, Apollinaire, Bobrowski / Bienek, Ekelof, Enzensberger, Four Greek Poets: Cavafy / Elytis / Gatsos / Seferis, Grass, Herbert, Holan, Holub, Kovner / Sachs, Montale, Pavese, Popa, Prevert, Quasimodo, Rilke, Three Czech poets: Nezval / Bartusek / Hanzlik, Ungaretti, Weores / Juhasz, Yevtushenko.' (Quote taken from the back cover) **A first printing of the true first edition, published as a paperback original, in its original card covers, in nice condition. An uncommon title in the series. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Seller Inventory # PB639
