Reviews

The revised edition of Glover and Schuder's handbook has about all the information the average competitive runner needs to assess and, if needed, modify his or her training to race better in the marathon down to the mile. Even the veteran "pre-boom" runner can find some useful suggestions here. Though opinionated at times, the authors' advice is sound and based both on current research in exercise physiology and on what works for other racers. Beginners and fitness-only runners should opt for Glover and Jack Shepherd's The Runner's Handbook ( LJ 8/78). Elite racers are better served by Marty Liquori's Real Running (Wideview Books, 1982). Public libraries should retain all three for running patrons.Robert Jordan, Iowa Testing Programs Lib., Univ. of Iowa, Iowa City
