PreS Noah's Ark provides a perfect vehicle for another of Rose's cumulative-repetitive animal tales. Miserable weather and crowded conditions have resulted in shortened tempers. Trouble in the Ark erupts as fly buzzes mouse and sets smoldering tempers ablaze with each animal separately, in turn, verbally accosting a fellow inhabitant. A flashfire ruckus ensues, eventually extinguished as the dove arrives with the olive twig, and Noah joins in with a resounding "yahoo" and "yippee." The animals happily depart, leaving Mr. and Mrs. Noah in their coveted peace and quiet. . .until two pesky flies make a return visit. Rose uses a creative typography, unique to each animal, for the words denoting the animal sounds. The hilarity of text is supported by his bright watercolor backdrops hosting a menagerie of wide-eyed, attention-demanding still-life animals, drawn to look like a child's drawing. Similar to Hewett's Two by Two (HBJ, 1984) in its humorous non-traditional approach, Rose has succeeded in producing an attractive, usable variation, one which encourages participation whether one-on-one or in a group setting.
