But one weekend, Katie's routine is interrupted by the sudden appearance of Jessica Jeanne, a neighbor's granddaughter who moves in on her turf. They become friends in the end, and it is this newfound relationship that makes KC's Saturdays so special. The first-person narrative is crisp, humorous, and chatty. Giff lures readers in through Katie's colorful monologue, which is best read aloud. Comical, cartoonlike illustrations playfully create Katie's city life in a picture-book format. Serious concerns about a young child roaming around New York City alone, the absence of parents, and Katie's "secret" (thumbsucking and her baby blanket souvenir which she carries in her pocket) are not addressed.
