On Saturday morning Katie, who lives in Greenwich Village, plays checkers, helps paint the hallway, receives a sugar cookie from Mrs. Zelinsky, and keeps a secret.

PreSchool-Grade 2-- Katie Cobb is a fiesty protagonist who lives in New York City's Greenwich Village. Every Saturday, she has a regular schedule of things she loves to do. But one weekend, Katie's routine is interrupted by the sudden appearance of Jessica Jeanne, a neighbor's granddaughter who moves in on her turf. They become friends in the end, and it is this newfound relationship that makes KC's Saturdays so special. The first-person narrative is crisp, humorous, and chatty. Giff lures readers in through Katie's colorful monologue, which is best read aloud. Comical, cartoonlike illustrations playfully create Katie's city life in a picture-book format. Serious concerns about a young child roaming around New York City alone, the absence of parents, and Katie's "secret" (thumbsucking and her baby blanket souvenir which she carries in her pocket) are not addressed. The emphasis is on Katie's independence, which gives readers a vicarious romp through an interesting neighborhood with a new friend. --Marianne Pilla, Upper Dublin Public Library, Dresher, PA

Katie Cobb luxuriates in her New York City neighborhood on weekends. PW said, "Giff humorously explores a child's world, deftly delineating the small events that are of consequence to youngsters. Remkiewicz's colorful, cartoony pictures provide winning commentary on a rollicking text." Ages 3-8.
