PreS?A book with soft, realistic pastel pictures of toddlers and baby animals at play. The left side of each double-page spread shows a different child and young creature accompanied by the refrain, "I'm a baby. You're a baby"; the right side shows the animal with its siblings, with a line of text above the illustration and the name of its young below it, e.g., "We are baby ducks. Ducklings." The figures are set off by a white background, and some pages have simple borders that reflect the featured animal (tin cans for goats, muddy hoofprints for pigs.) While the human youngsters share the same general features, care has been taken to vary skin color and hair texture for a multiethnic look. Rather, Kopper introduces and names a bevy of barnyard animal offspring: calves, foals, kids, and kittens, among others. The uncomplicated text is bolstered by charming art that shows a multicultural assortment of human children at play with baby animal buddies.
