From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1 Lucy and Tom, a cherubic, tousled pair of siblings, are the stars of this alphabetized catalog of everyday items. Each letter is shown in both upper- and lower-case and is accompanied by a short paragraph, often containing more than one word to go along with the letter. While nearly all of the words are readily familiar to preschoolers, one or two may need explanationfor example, ``Y is for yachts on the water'' shows a group of children sailing toy boats ; some youngsters may not make the connection unaided. The few Briticisms (``cross'' instead of angry, ``sweets'' instead of candy) are easily understood in context. Hughes' humorous illustrations are cheerfully cluttered and untidy, and Lucy and Tom are a winning, if sometimes mischievous, pair. Too complex to be a first book on the ABCs, this will nonetheless delight listeners who need or want to reinforce their alphabet skills. Kathleen Brachmann, Highland Park Public Library, Ill.
