When Rebecca, known for spinning stories, reports that a giant moose is helping himself in the garden, her family turns a deaf ear. "When I have a little girl, I'll always listen to her," Rebecca vows. Undaunted, she sets out to chase the unlikely but nonetheless tangible visitor away, armed only with her monster suit and accompanied by her dog for moral support. At first, it looks as if the moose, too, will ignore Rebecca, but her determination eventually pays off. Once again, Alexander demonstrates an accurately childlike sensibility. Whether they read the story literally or accept it entirely as the heroine's fantasy, children will sympathize with Rebecca's frustration at not being listened to and will derive satisfaction from what results. Whimsical, humorous and expressive, the pastel-colored illustrations enhance the story's pleasures. Ages 3-7.

PreSchool-Grade 2 Imaginative Rebecca, accompanied by her dog, Homer, tries in vain to warn her family that a moose has invaded their garden. Neither her brother nor her mother believe her, and her father can't seem to be pried away from his TV football game. Even the moose won't listen to Rebecca until he has wiped out the garden, at which point her threats are heeded and he takes off. When her family discovers the ravaged garden, Rebecca smugly informs them that she is busy and will tell them about it later. This is classic Alexander: simply told, gently humorous, superbly illustrated, and perfectly attuned to the thoughts and feelings of children. A choice addition to any collection serving young children. Laura McCutcheon, St. Catherine's School, Richmond, Va.
