Back in print, an exuberant and funny Yeoman-Blake story in which hundreds of mice trick a grumpy millerThe grumpy miller is having mouse trouble, so he buys himself a large tabby cat. Fortunately for the mice, the cat is too unfit to catch even a single mouse. But when the miller loses his temper and threatens to drown the poor tabby, the mice decide they must intervene, as they have grown surprisingly fond of him.

John Yeoman and Quentin Blake's previous collaborations include The Bear's Water Picnic, The Bear's Winter House, Our Village, and The Wild Washerwoman. Best known for his Roald Dahl illustrations, Quentin Blake has won the Whitbread Award, the Kate Greenaway Medal, and the Emil/Kurt Maschler Award, among numerous others.
In this paperback reissue of a 1972 publication, a mill in the English countryside provides the backdrop for a tale of unlikely friendship. Hundreds of mice have taken up happy residence in a dilapidated windmill, much to the chagrin of the mean miller, who acquires a lazy tabby in hopes of getting rid of them. The tabby is no mouser and is so useless that the mice themselves take pity on him, deciding to build his confidence with games and exercise. Fed up, the miller moves to destroy the poor cat, and the mice intervene to save the day. With suitably silly (and clever) rodent protagonists, a helpless hero, and a larger-than-life miller villain, Yeoman’s tale has the feel of folklore. Blake’s sketchy cartoons vibrate with energy and capture remarkable emotion and attitude in just a few loose lines. The nocturnal shenanigans make this an especially appealing bedtime read-aloud, and the lengthier narrative will tempt and challenge adventurous beginning readers.
