A poetic description of love between a boy and his grandfather, using metaphors of nature throughout the seasons

PreSchool-Grade 2-- A grandfather describes to his grandson how much he loves him, in short, steady, imagistic stanzas such as "I love you high/ Like the top of the sky," and "I love you true/ Like the mountain view/Where earth meets sky/ And birds fly through." The two roam through the changing seasons in a spectacular rural Maine setting. They are often shown as small figures, or are even absent, as the perspectives change. Isadora creates lovely spreading landscapes, with expansive skies and dramatic sunsets. Fall and winter scenes are particularly captivating. Unfortunately, on the last spread the picture of the boy is lost in the gutter. Though some of the verse is a bit bland, this book, like Lindbergh's The Midnight Farm (Dial, 1987), should be popular for intimate sharing. --Leda Schubert, Vermont Department of Education, Montpelier

Although it occasionally runs to the mundane, Lindbergh's ( View from the Air ) simple poem tenderly expresses a man's love for his grandchild. On each page, a four-line rhymed verse, presented without punctuation, evokes an image of nature as the narrator describes the extent of his affection: "I love you wide / Like the earth's great tide / With a hug of oceans / Held inside." In some cases, the loving grandfather's similes make reference to the passing seasons, which Isadora ( Ben's Trumpet ; Over the Green Hills ) renders in striking watercolors. Her sweeping land- and seascapes, emphasizing grand expanses of sometimes brilliantly tinted skies, are truly imposing. And whether the devoted grandfather and child are playing, working or just sitting together, the art captures the close bond between them. Ages 3-up.
