PreSchool-Grade 1?Using the pattern of the nursery rhyme, "Who Killed Cock Robin?," Greeley tells the story of an oak tree, from its start as an acorn to its end as a dead stump with a seed beginning the cycle again. The difficulty in doing this sort of rhythmic adaptation comes in making the verse flow smoothly throughout while keeping the words meaningful. As often happens, some are more successful than others. The illustrations are realistic with lots of pleasant naturalistic details showing a pastoral setting, except for a picture of the storm that breaks a branch. Interior borders and decorations are attractive and serve to unify text and illustrations. Wide white borders frame the pages, giving the book a sense of tradition and formality that suits the narrative.
