A bedtime book explores the natural world, demonstrating what goes on while a small child sleeps, from spiders weaving their webs to penguins playing in frozen lands far away, through rhyming verse and full-color illustrations. For children under three.

Simple two-word and three-word lines compose this rhythmic lullaby aimed at the very youngest listener. ``Oh, baby, while you sleep . . ./breezes sweep/rivers rush/crickets hush/bears tumble/bees bumble/ . . . nestlings peep/all while you sleep.'' Moore's first book is a pleasure to read aloud, and even parents who find reading difficult will quickly settle into the words. Gilbert mixes European and African landscape images, all of them cozy, in soft pictures that seem bathed in twilight. The clearly outlined animal figures--bears, zebras, hummingbirds, and lions--are easy to see and to identify, even from a distance--ideal for lapsitting programs in libraries. PreS?"Oh, baby, while you sleep...breezes sweep/rivers rush/ crickets hush." So begins this book that features rhyming couplets set on full-page paintings of the natural world. From Africa ("zebras drink"; "hippos wink") to the arctic ("icebergs bump"; "penguins jump") and the rain forest ("lizards creep"; "gibbons leap"), the natural world is brought to life through lush, colorful illustrations that leap off the pages. The lilting rhythm of the verse is reminiscent of Margaret Wise Brown's Goodnight Moon (HarperCollins, 1947). While there's a plethora of bedtime books in print, you'll probably want to make room for this one.?Tom S. Hurlburt, La Crosse Public Library, WI
