Grade 2-5-Using as a basis the true story of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid's Thanksgiving banquet for their Brown's Hole, UT, friends in the late 1890s, McCully introduces two fictional characters, bringing the tale into a child's realm. Clara and her mother are traveling across country to make a new life with Papa in California when a mountain blizzard blocks their train. Facing either freezing in the car or the treachery of train robbers (the child saw a wanted poster for Butch Cassidy), Mama accepts a fellow passenger's invitation to have Thanksgiving dinner with him and his friends. After a long and arduous journey by sleigh, they arrive at their destination where they are warmly welcomed and enjoy a marvelous feast. It's only when Clara gets a good look at the young gentleman who asks her to dance that she realizes that he is Butch Cassidy; they have been dining with a band of notorious outlaws. McCully's single- and double-page full-color spreads evocatively capture the ambiance of the early trains, the sweep of the landscape, and the excitement of the adventure; the artist also deftly individualizes her characters with aplomb. An appended note and additional information on the copyright page fill in the historical background, and a two-page map showing the Union Pacific railroad routes rounds out the presentation.
