Poems examine the nature of morality and personal values in the modern world

Wrigley attempts to combine the mystical with the prosaic, linking animals and angels, sinners and saints. In one of the most graceful poems in this book, a young man sits with his feet in a china bowl rimmed with painted angels, watching his female lover shave his legs and later lay him down, hairless, and position herself against his back so that her body seems to be his "wings." In other poems, a man collects offerings from a river--"Here is an agate polished over years, / a few bones picked clean and gnawed by mice"--to convince a woman to love him; this is much like Wrigley as he explores the perimeters of existence and brings back small observations to us. There is a form of beautiful sadness in all his poems, even when they consider the chores of daily living or the sweet intimacy of touch. Although he offers his fictional characters redemption, they can never quite pull themselves away from the delicious melancholy that haunts his work. Elizabeth Gunderson
