Nabokov's masterly Collected Poems span the decades of his career, from 'Music', written in 1914, to the short, playful 'To Vera', composed in 1974. 'The University Poem', one of Nabokov's major poetic works, is here in English for the first an extraordinary autobiographical poem looking back at his time at Cambridge, with its dinners, girls and memories, it is suffused with rich description, wit and verbal dexterity. Included too are the surreally comic 'A Literary Dinner', the enchanting, 'Eve', the wryly humorous 'An Evening of Russian Poetry' and a meditation on the act of creation, 'Tolstoy', as well as verse written on America, lepidoptery, sport, love and Nabokov's Russian homeland.

Vladimir Nabokov (1899-1977) was one of the great writers of the twentieth century, as well as a translator and lepidopterist. His works include, from the Russian novels, The Luzhin Defense and The Gift; from the English novels, Lolita, Pnin, Pale Fire and Ada; the autobiographical Speak, Memory; translations of Alice in Wonderland into Russian and Eugene Onegin into English; and lectures on literature. All of the fiction and Speak, Memory are published in Penguin.
The poems are coy, clever, sophisticated, sonorous and worldly. In other words, Nabokovian * New York Daily News *

Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. Now hard to find in this collectable edition. A stunning and timely edition, with a special introduction by Thomas Karshan. Nabokov's first love was poetry, and his fascination for it was something he pursued all his life. By incorporating poetry into his novels, most notably in Pale Fire, he probably sent many of his readers off in search of his poetry collections. The Shade poems from Pale Fire are not included in this collection, perhaps because Nabokov was consciously adopting the voice of another character. But what is refreshing about this volume is the new translations from the Russian by Nabokov's son, Dmitri. This is a fabulous volume containing work that is decidedly 'modern' but easily accessible. It is enormously enjoyable. Always clever, frequently charming, this is a delightful volume for poetry lovers everywhere. It is essential for Nabokov fans. Protected jacket, first hardback printing, and unread. Seller Inventory # ABE-1602568467717
