For far too long, America's epic struggle for independence from British rule has been shrouded in a haze of legend and invention. In this stirring and colorful account, Hibbert offers the Revolution from the perspective of the vanquished. Here the fabled heroes and villains on both sides of the conflict come to life - Washington, Revere, Burgoyne, Cornwallis, and Benedict Arnold - in a remarkably compelling work that truly reveals, for perhaps the first time, not only how the colonists won the war, but why the British lost it.
"Hibbert has an unerring touch in getting at the flesh and blood of events and people...zestful storytelling." (Chicago Tribune)

It is said that the victors write the history books, but in this instance Hibbert describes the American Revolution as the British and American Loyalists saw it. There are a few surprises here, the biggest of which may be the large number of American Loyalists, for the revolution was in many ways a "civil war." Still the feats of the Patriots and their foes are just as amazing. David Case's reading ably conveys this spellbinding account to the listener. His voice has an air of authority and confidence that is especially strong when reading the narrative sections and the British accounts. His renditions of American accents, although adequate, are not up to the same level. However, this does not detract from an overall fine performance of a fascinating story. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This work offers a full-length, popular history of the American War of Independence - the "cruel accursed war" that changed the world forever. The story of this war has usually been told in terms of a conflict between blundering British generals and their rigidly disciplined red-coated troops on the one side, and heroic American patriots in homespun shirts and coonskin caps on the other. Here, the author portrays the realities of a war condemned by thousands of Americans, in which George Washington came perilously close to defeat. Both before and after General Burgoyne's surrender at Saratoga, the British rarely lost a battle until the French helped the rebels defeat Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown in 1781. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Seller Inventory # GOR001740810
