Michael Garland is the author of many popular picture books, including Mystery Mansion, the first puzzle book about Tommy and Aunt Jeanne, and Christmas Magic, which Booklist called "ideal for December sharing."
PreS-Gr. 2. On Christmas Eve, Aunt Jeanne sends Tommy a note asking him to climb into the waiting cab and come to meet her. The magical taxi takes off like a rocket and flies Tommy to Christmas City, where he follows a series of clues to find Aunt Jeanne. The point of Tommy's trip is not the destination--children will soon figure out that Aunt Jeanne is actually following Tommy. It is really the treasure hunt for things that are sometimes hidden and sometimes in plain sight, such as 18 angels, 35 candy canes, the names of Santa's reindeer, the Christmas greetings in 10 languages, and all the people, animals, and items mentioned in the song "The Twelve Days of Christmas." Garland, who also wrote and illustrated Dinner at Magritte's (1995) and Icarus Swinebuckle (2000), pulls out all the digital stops to create the settings for Christmas City, an ornately detailed, architectural fantasy of a grand metropolis. Sometimes dreamlike in its effects, the artwork sparkles with tinsel-bright colors, a profusion of forms, and plenty of action. Children who love the Where's Waldo? and the I Spy series will page through this book over and over for the love of the hunt. Carolyn Phelan
