Amelia Earhart—pioneer, adventurer, pilot
As a child, Amelia Earhart wondered why there were no horoines in her favorite adventure stories. She resolved to change that when she grew up. And so she did, becoming one of the pioneers of aviation. Not only was Amelia Earhart the first woman in the world to fly across the Atlantic Ocean, she was the first person to cross it twice. Her life became a great adventure story—and a great mystery, too. In 1937, on an around-the-world flight, Amelia disappeared. Today, her courage and sprit remain an inspiration to everyone who flies or dreams of adventure.

Eileen McKeating is a published author and an illustrator of children's books. Some of the published credits of Eileen McKeating include The Story of Annie Sullivan: Helen Keller's Teacher, Famous Lives, Amelia Earhart: Courage in the Sky, and Fifteenth Peanut Butter Sandwich.
Grade 3-6-- An adequate biography of the famous aviator, marred by Kerby's odd evaluation of significant events in Earhart's early life and her dismissive description of Earhart's attitude towards marriage as "strange." Full-page black-and-white drawings of unexceptional quality illustrate the text. Chadwick's Amelia Earhart (Lerner, 1987) covers the same material in a crisp, objective manner and includes photos and a map of Earhart's around-the-world flight. Lauber's Lost Star (Scholastic, 1988), for grades 5-8, is even better, as it is well written; thorough; and has an index, bibliography, photos, and maps. Brown's Amelia Earhart Takes Off (Whitman, 1985) is average but uninspiring. --Ann W. Moore, formerly at Lane Road Library, Columbus, OH
