George, best known for her Newbery Medal-winning Julie of the Wolves, has gathered much information from naturalists, psychologists, and zoologists and incorporated it into this book on animal communication. She describes how dogs, cats, birds, and horses (and, to a lesser extent, some other species) indicate their thoughts through behavior. She uses stories of human experiences with individual animals often, cites many authorities on animal behavior, and includes scientific data. This book provides an educative and entertaining introduction to the field of animal communication for both adults and young adults. It would be a fine choice for public libraries. Susan Matusak, Wilson Coll. Lib., Chambersburg, Pa.
