Gli Ebrei sono costretti ad abbandonare le loro case per scampare al pericolo dell'avanzata dei Cosacchi. La locanda ("Austeria" in galiziano) del vecchio e saggio Tag, anche lui ebreo, diventa ben presto un rifugio per tutti gli sfollati. Nella locanda costoro si ritrovano assieme a una baronessa austriaca in fuga, a un ussaro ungherese, lasciato indietro dal suo battaglione, e a un prete del posto che simpatizza per gli sfortunati arrivati fin lì.
