Synopsis
Siamo in Galizia, nel 1914 alla vigilia della Prima Guerra Mondiale. Nella stessa regione convivono Polacchi, Ucraini ed Ebrei. Gli Ebrei sono costretti ad abbandonare le loro case per scampare al pericolo dell'avanzata dei Cosacchi. La locanda ("Austeria" in galiziano) del vecchio e saggio Tag, anche lui ebreo, diventa ben presto un rifugio per tutti gli sfollati. Nella locanda costoro si ritrovano assieme a una baronessa austriaca in fuga, a un ussaro ungherese, lasciato indietro dal suo battaglione, e a un prete del posto che simpatizza per gli sfortunati arrivati fin lì.
