About the Author
GÜNTER GRASS (1927–2015), Germany's most celebrated contemporary writer, attained worldwide renown with the publication of his novel The Tin Drum in 1959. A man of remarkable versatility, Grass was a poet, playwright, social critic, graphic artist, and novelist. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1999.

A tight, clean, sound copy in green paper covered boards quarter bound in black cloth with silver lettering and graphics on the spine and a large silver graphic on the front with very minor overall shelf wear plus there are the usual library stamps and label on the front freepaper, title page, and top outside paper edges plus the front endpaper has been removed as part of the library's withdrawal process plus there is some light tape staining on the outside surfaces of the boards from where the dust jacket endflaps were taped down to the boards. The 30 Years' War is drawing to a close and a group of poets from all parts of Germany gathered togethe for the purpose of strengthening the last remaining bond within a divided nation: its language and literature. The author sets this fictitious meeting in parallel with a real meeting of German poets and writers, known as Group 47 at the end of World War II.
