Reviews

Grade 5-8?Striking visual images coupled with a succinct, vividly written text provide an excellent encapsulated look at the subject. Although the emphasis is on military aspects of the war, the social and political forces of the time are not ignored. The author ends with a discussion of the long-reaching consequences that permeated the social and economic fabric of much of the world. Period photographs and full-color dramatizations of scenes reflect conditions endured by military personnel and civilian populations; maps and a time line of political events and military offenses help to provide perspective. This is an effective introduction. Other books, such as Peter Bosco's World War I (Facts on File, 1991) and Richard Tames's 1900-1919 (Watts, 1991; o p.), can fill in the gaps with more detailed information.?Cynthia M.
