Grade 5-8--It's easy to find pictures of knights in armor, but few sources offer full-color photographs of actors dressed in chain mail, using accurately repro duced weapons, placed against authenic settings. And that's what readers find here. A two-page introduction sets the historical and cultural scene; subse quent chapters treat subjects such as the feudal system, the crusades, weapons, tournaments, and the decline of knight hood. All are concise and well written. Much of the information found in The Vikings can be found elsewhere, but, as with the previous title, it's rare to find it so attractively packaged. A Viking farm is backed up by a large photograph of a Norwegian fjord. Fighting men armed with swords and shields are shown in a restored ship. Colonists sailing to Ice land are wearing authentic costumes and sailing toward a real glacier-stud ded shore. In concise, lively writing, the 27 double-page chapters cover signifi cant aspects of Viking culture from shipbuilding to trading to burial cere monies. In both books, a concluding chapter entitled ``How Do We Know'' explains the archaeological, historical, and literary sources of the subjects. Two worthwhile selections for all collec tions.
