From School Library Journal

PreSchool-K-- Robert's vivid imagination turns ordinary household items into scary things. Grandpa gives him a tip from his former lion-taming days: just imagine those creatures in funny, harmless ways. While riding the local carnival's Ghost Train, Robert has a chance to try that trick. While his friends run, terrified by the monsters, Robert pictures the creatures in their T-shirts and undershorts. Smiling and holding hands with a diapered creature, Robert shows that his imagination is well "in hand." Boldly crayoned cartoonlike drawings are most clever when the scary imaginings are closely related to ordinary things: the vacuum cleaner becomes a roaring dragon's tail; a teakettle provides the locomotive's steam; and fur coats look like bears. The final illustration doesn't deny the value of imagination--it just gives it the control sure to satisfy young monster-makers. --Jane Saliers, Atlanta Public Library
