PreSchool-Grade 1 If we knew the tune we could hum along: the lyrics of a children's song make up the text of this bedtime book. The words are as simple as the events that they relate: donning pj's, romping, being read to, falling asleep. (One line of adult-speak sticks out: ``I love being little and I'll love being grown''). Bowers has provided cuddly-looking acrylics, a smug little kid, and a passle of appealing stuffed animals. His strictly child-centered compositions push the heads of the parents out of the frame. The bouncy pictures and the text's rhythm and refrain do their best in the absence of narrative tension or ideas, but lyrics without the structure of the music are rather limp and shapeless: pajamas hung on a peg, waiting for musical form to fill them out. A boy who is at first reluctant to put on his pajamas ends up celebrating his bedtime attire. Clean and warm in his pajamas, he still has much to do before going to sleep. He has to run around, stand on his head and scare all the wild animals in his closet. He fades fast once Dad reads him a story. The words of this tale are actually lyrics to a song; Bowers uses acrylics to illustrate the gleeful text: ferocious beasts in the closet are really lovable stuffed animals, and the upside-down view of the room will charm children. The only addition readers may wish for is the inclusion of a cassette tape. Ages 3-6.
