One day young Marici wishes for a new friend, and along comes a beautiful goose. Their meeting is part magic, part fable, and part love. Based on an ancient Chinese tale, the poetic text is gloriously illustrated by Caldecott Honor recipient Stephen T. Johnson. Poet Gary Snyder contributes beautiful Chinese calligraphy to make this a book to treasure.

STEPHEN T. JOHNSON has illustrated many books for children, including two by Robert Burleigh: Goal and Hoops, an ALA Notable Children's Book and a School Library Journal Best Book of the Year. He lives in Kansas.
Kindergarten-Grade 3. Young Marici goes to live with her aunt after her parents die. While the woman is at work, the child walks in the woods, perhaps instinctively in search of healing. Listening to the vocalizations of indigenous fauna, she wishes that she too had a song to sing. She meets a Canada goose that is separated from its flock and they bond in solitude. Ultimately they help one another: Marici finds her song and the goose leaves to find his flock. The sinuous, well-written, even poetic prose starts and ends realistically and is elastic enough to smoothly incorporate a talking goose in the middle. Johnson's watercolor and pastel illustrations winningly capture natural details in a somewhat idealized fashion; blues of water and sky predominate. In a colophon, Sanfield reveals his inspiration to be the famous "Ten Oxherding Pictures" of Zen Buddhism in Paul Reps's Zen Flesh, Zen Bones (Doubleday, 1961). Be that as it may, this is bibliotherapy that will take its graceful and useful place in the literature of loss.?John Philbrook, formerly at San Francisco Public Library
