Miss Bilberry just can’t help wondering whether she might be happier if she lived on the other side of the mountains. So, with her cat, Chester, her dog, Cecilie, and her two birds, Chitty and Chatty, at her side, and all her worldly possessions in a wheelbarrow, she sets off to find out. “Chichester Clark’s breezy writing style matches the quirky, can-do spirit of Miss Bilberry.”--Publishers Weekly

Kindergarten-Grade 2-The grass is always greener- in this case-across the mountains. Miss Bilberry lives happily in a cozy house with her dog, cat, and two birds, surrounded by her garden and a cool veranda that faces the blue peaks in the distance. Unfortunately, the woman can't help wondering if she wouldn't be even happier on the other side of the mountains. So, she packs all her worldly goods in a cart and, pets in tow, sets out, trudging over all kinds of terrain, through all kinds of weather, loses her bearings, and then finally comes to a cozy house with a cool veranda, garden, and trees. Life is better than ever, though it is a mystery to Miss Bilberry that, after all that traveling, the mountains are still in front of, rather than behind, the house. Illustrations are in tropical bright colors and border on surreal through the journey, while the home scenes are more in the folk tradition. The sense of distance and danger of the travels are dramatized by darkened tones and grasping foliage. Throughout, the woman wears voluminous garb and an absurd, plum-purple hat. A story of determination and contentment niggled by eternal curiosity.
