Nineteen poems, several of which appear in print for the first time, reflect the point of view of an animal or are about the animals present in the stable where Jesus was born. Each poem is set upon a backdrop of flowers associated with Christmas or other winter solstice celebrations. In addition, small line drawings of animals are hidden in each illustration; they unite in a parade in the last illustration for Julia Cunningham's "Hymn to Joy." Elizabeth Coatsworth, Phyllis McGinley, Jane Yolen, and Norma Farber are some of the poets represented. While books of collected Christmas stories often include poetry, this collection provides at one stop a variety from which to select verses for any age, whether for lap reading, story hours, or pageants.
