Joung Un Kim has illustrated five picture books, including A Year for Kiko by Freida Wolff. She lives in New York.
Kindergarten-Grade 2-In this succinct pourquoi tale, boastful Frog challenges other animals to staring contests. He defeats Horse and Rabbit, then takes on Fish. This dare lasts so long that Frog's eyes get "big, big, BIG" before he loses to the unblinking winner. Quirkily charming pictures in vivid colors strongly support the easy text. The book's small size makes it accessible to independent reading by the target audience. A solid choice for emerging readers.

Gr. 1-2. In this pourquois story, Frog brags that he can stare longer than the other animals. One by one, they challenge him to a staring contest. Though Frog defeats Horse and Rabbit, Fish easily outstares him, because "a fish can't blink!" However, Frog's long effort to keep his eyes open makes them grow larger, and they remain so to this day. Brief but well told, Franco's tale provides young readers with a solid story told in short, simple words. Kim's illustrations, which appear to be acrylic paintings, feature bold forms and colors suggesting the setting and personifying the animal characters. Satisfying fare from the Green Light Reader series. Carolyn Phelan
