Reviews

Grade 1-2-Mom and Pop Nash discover that a wolf is stealing their hens' eggs. They set traps but at first they succeed only in tangling up themselves. When they finally catch the pesky predator, they realize that he was actually painting the eggs, not eating them. The spare sentences and large type invite beginning readers to follow this funny tale, and the folksy watercolor-and-ink cartoons effectively capture the couple's slapstick attempts to catch their prey.

In this absurd but sometimes funny story, Mom and Pop Nash lay traps to catch the wolf who steals eggs from their henhouse each night. The first two tries end badly: first Pop catches Mom in his giant net, then the befuddled farmers become entangled in a tentlike contraption meant for the wolf. Finally, they trap the wolf in a pit, only to find that he has been decorating their eggs rather than eating them. When he offers to return the painted eggs, Mom and Pop go into business selling them. Even at the end, the wolf's sly look will leave readers wondering about his true intentions. Watercolor washes brighten the pages of this short, appealing Greenlight Reader, which, despite its rather quick, inconclusive ending, is a winning combination of adventure and humor. Carolyn Phelan
