Mandy survived the terrible accident that killed her mother, but she was left blind and alone. Now she lives with relatives she doesn't know, attends a new school, and tries to make friends--all the while struggling to function without sight.
Her unpredictable life takes its strangest turn when she begins to hear the oddest things through the window of her attic room. In fact, what she hears--and seems to "see"--are events that happened years ago, before she was even born. . . .

Mandy, the blind teenager who is the main character in THE WINDOW, is someone very close to my heart. I first met her the day she appeared on my computer screen. She had a proud and independent voice, the sound of a girl ready to face whatever might come her way. She had a lot to learn, though, both about blindness and about letting other people into her life, and I learned right along with her.
To help understand Mandy and the challenges she faced, I tried to experience some of what she would need to know. I learned the basics of reading braille and about orientation and mobility skills. I honed the manuscript with help from people who would know what I'd gotten right or wrong--teachers and counselors and young people who, like Mandy, are making their own way in a world that comes to them through senses other than sight.
