Meantime, fellow novices Morning Star and Wildman struggle to heed the calls of their own destinies. The book's numerous protagonists walk paths pitted with uncertainty and danger, converging as the Nomana face enemies on three fronts. Themes of true faith and the corruptibility of power feel weighty and deliberate at times, but Nicholson, a successful screenwriter, knows how to entertain: a bumbling suitor's overtures are priceless ("Your mouth is as soft as a foal's, sucking the udder of love"), and one evildoer expires in a memorably horrific manner. Well plotted and paced, if a bit programmatic, this follow-up to Seeker (2006), book 1 in the Noble Warriors sequence, won't disappoint returning readers. Mattson, Jennifer
