From Booklist:
Gr. 2-4, younger for reading aloud. Mutton soup, despite its ominous sound, is one of Johnny Mutton's favorite snacks: "100% melted vanilla ice cream with a cherry on top." The kid-friendly sensibility indicated by this "recipe" holds sway throughout Proimos' trio of graphic-novel style stories, all starring a charismatic lamb adopted by a human mother--a jokey premise that serves as a kind of eccentric metaphor for embracing individuality. As in The Many Adventures of Johnny Mutton (2001) and Johnny Mutton, He's So Him (2003), Johnny demonstrates his irrepressible spirit in five episodes, all graced with Proimos' zippy dialogue and antic, brightly colored art. In one particularly funny tale, Johnny's momma sends him for etiquette training, and he winds up teaching a few lessons of his own. In another, his attempts to set a roller-coaster-riding world record are thwarted by motion sickness. Though the text is not as simple as a traditional easy reader, beginning readers will be so enamored of the comic-book packaging that they probably won't notice. Jennifer Mattson
