Grade 7-12 Ancient and modern methods of predicting the future are contrasted and analyzed in this well-ordered and forthright discussion. The opening section, a dramatic comparison between the ancient art of hepatoscopy (inspection of animal livers) and an earthquake prediction experiment, illustrates the extremes of prediction. Various ancient arts are investigatedastrology, dream interpretation, trances and visions, ESP, oraclesand often a modern example underscores the fact that some of these methods have persisted to the present. The development of scientific methods of prediction is outlined, beginning with Pascal and Galileo and covering meteorology, astronomy/astrology, earthquake prediction, and polls. The success of both ancient and modern practices is discussed. Not surprisingly, the ancient arts are discredited, but they are not totally dismissed, as Weiss shows how some of them may actually have been successful, albeit due to other factors. Also noted are the pitfalls of scientific predictions, such as self-fulfilling prophecy and blind resignation to fate. Weiss concludes that no prediction is ever a certainty, leaving man's futuregood or illlargely his own responsibility. The sparse black-and-white illustrations do not contribute greatly to the presentation, but all in all, this is a book that can be suggested for pleasure reading as well as for research.
