Ages 5-8. In this sequel to Junior Kroll (1993), the obstreperous yet appealing toddler returns in 12 new illustrated poems. This time out, he attempts to play the saxophone and the bass, learns to waltz with Cousin Blanche, and adds a macaw, a cat, and a stuffed rabbit to his burgeoning collection of pets. Although the irrepressible Junior can be annoying (torturing his cousin Honey) and devious (slipping his peas under the table in order to get dessert), just as often he can be quick thinking (rescuing his pet macaw when it falls and breaks its beak) and endearing (buying the family an Easter bunny with his own savings). The poems are only loosely connected, making it easy to dip into Junior's escapades. Most have an easy delivery. The bright, gouache paintings offer many interesting details that add to the book's humor. A delightful, sophisticated choice that will appeal to mischievous listeners everywhere. Kay Weisman

Grade 2-4-Aside from fans of the Paraskevas's Junior Kroll (Harcourt, 1993), it is unlikely that this volume of poetry will find a wide audience. The events described are generally predictable, including a visit from a spoiled young cousin; the arrival of a talking parrot, a birthday present for Junior; and an obligatory visit to a crusty but friendly old dowager whose heart is gladdened by Junior's gift of a pipe-cleaner Christmas tree. Awkward rhythms and singsong rhymes do little to increase the appeal of the little boy's smug personality and tedious adventures. Somewhat static illustrations fail to enliven the wordy text, although they are colorful and contain amusing details. Stick to old favorites like Kay Thompson's Eloise (S.&S., 1969) for a humorous look at the upper crust.
