About the Authors

Donna Gelfand is Professor of Psychology at the University of Utah. She received a Ph.D. in psychology with an emphasis on clinical psychology at Stanford University in 1961, and completed a clinical internship at the VA Hospital in Palo Alto. While working as a psychologist at the Community Mental Health Service of San Jose California she also taught at San Jose State University. Then she joined the faculty in the psychology department at the University of Utah, first serving as director of the department's child clinic, then coordinator of the developmental psychology program, chair of the department of psychology, and dean of the college of social and behavioral science. She studies the effects of maternal depression on children and how these adverse effects can be counteracted. In addition to this book, now in its 4th edition, she has published numerous research papers and several books, including Child Behavior Analysis and Therapy, with Donald Hartmann, Developmental Psychology and Psychopathology, with Lizette Peterson-Homer, and edited Social Learning in Childhood. She received the University of Utah's Distinguished Research Award. She has served on numerous journal editorial boards, was the founding chair of the APA Committee on Children, Youth, and Families, president of the Rocky Mt. Psychological Association, chair of Section III, Division 12 of the American Psychological Association, and is listed in Who's Who in America.

William R. Jenson, Ph.D., has worked for many years with behaviorally disordered children. He completed a clinical internship at Las Vegas Mental Health Center and later directed their Adolescent Residential Center. He then assumed the directorship of the Children's Behavior Therapy Unit for Salt Lake Mental Health. Dr. Jenson is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Utah. His research interests include management, behavioral assessment, academic interventions, and parent training. He has published several books, classroom materials, journal articles, resources for teachers, and numerous research papers. For the past 15 years, he has been an active staff development presenter and consultant for many school districts, mental health centers, and parent organizations. He is probably best known for coauthoring THE TOUGH KID BOOK and THE TOUGH KID TOOL BOX.

Dr. Clifford J. Drew is a professor in Special Education and Educational Psychology at the University of Utah. He spent ten years in the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and has been with the University of Utah since 1971. He has over 110 scholarly contributions, including books, chapters, and articles as well as national and international presentations; and more than $11 million in federal, state, and private sector grants to his credit. His articles have appeared in Exceptional Children, American Journal of Mental Deficiency, Psychology Reports, Psychonomic Science, Science, Mental Retardation, Journal of the School of Psychology, School of Psychology Review, Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, Journal of Learning Disabilities, and American Journal of Family Therapy, among others. His academic interests include research methods, human development and disabilities, applications of information technology, and outreach in higher education.
