About the Authors

Cynthia D. Martin, Ph.D. founded A Center for Adoption Services in 1991 and was Director until retiring in 2000.  She has worked in the field of adoption for more than 28 years, and is the author and co-author of books on adoption.

She is currently Executive Director of Parenting Matters Foundation, a nonprofit organization that grew out of a volunteer effort in 1990 and is now a national model for low-cost programs designed to help parents become better parents.

Cynthia is a registered counselor in the State of Washington, and a licensed clinical psychologist and marriage, family and child therapist in the State of California.  She has taught at the University of California and spoken extensively on the subjects of adoption, pregnancy counseling and family issues.  She has had extensive training in the placement of special needs and mixed-race children.

Dru Martin Groves, M.A. is the Director of A Center for Adoption Services.  She is a registered counselor with more than 14 years of experience in the field of adoption and works out of an office in Bainbridge Island, Washington.

Dru has worked extensively with birthmothers making decisions about their unplanned pregnancies and with birthmothers who have placed children many years ago.  She works with couples hoping to adopt and with children who were adopted.  Dru has training and experience in grief counseling and in adoption reunions.

As an adopted child, Dru brings a unique perspective to the adoption process ― one that places the child's best interests first, but acknowledges this is most often accomplished by accommodating needs and wishes of the adoptive parents and birthparents.
