The books of the Bible are exam ined in the light of contemporary experi ence, ancient scholarship, literary val ue, and divine revelation. The essays are in turn angry, joyous, sad, questioning, and humorous. Young people of any faith will gain a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the Bible. Thirty-seven Jewish-American writers interact with the various books of the Hebrew Bible, providing essays ranging from expositions of the text to reminiscences of an author's childhood. The essays that move close to the text are often insightful, illuminating both scripture and Bible characters. Other essays, in which literary imagination is given free rein, have less to offer those wishing to understand the text. These latter essays often say more about the author than the text.
