About the Author

William Golding (1911-1993) was born in Cornwall, England, and educated at Oxford University. His first book, Poems, was published in 1935. He served in the Royal Navy, and while teaching school after the war, he wrote Lord of the Flies, his first novel. A prominent novelist, essayist, and poet, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1983.
