Synopsis

The principal theme of this ambitious book is Time, threading together three generations of an upper-class English family, the Pargiters.

The author opens in the uncertain spring of 1880, following Colonel Abel Pargiter and his children through the drawing-room of Abercorn Terrace. It records their tea-trays, sickrooms, street crossings, and family quarrels, catching each son and daughter where domestic routine brushes against private dread.

The chapters advance across fifty years of social change, moving the household from Victorian hansom cabs to wartime air raids and midnight London streets. Abercorn Terrace gives way to solitary lodgings and rented offices, where cousins meet by chance across the wreckage of old family certainties.

The characters come and go, meet, talk, think, dream, grow older, in a continuous ritual of life that eludes meaning.

  • Family Saga: Eleanor manages tenement housing committees, Morris devilled at the Bar, Rose joins suffragist protests, and Martin returns from Africa as the siblings disperse.
  • Multiple POV: The perspective moves between Oxford academic parlours, country rectories, and impoverished lodgings across the Thames, charting each generation’s private dilemmas.
  • Historical London: Real-world crises—Parnell’s fall, the death of King Edward, and the 1917 air raids—pierce domestic routines from late-Victorian drawing rooms to post-war streets.
  • Also by This Author: Mrs. Dalloway, Orlando, A Biography and The Waves.
