About the Author

Chas. W. Freeman, Jr., has been a career officer in the U.S. Foreign Service, ambassador to Saudi Arabia during the Persian Gulf War, and assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs. He was a fellow at the United States Institute of Peace in 1994-95 and is the author of Arts of Power: Statecraft and Diplomacy (USIP Press) and Diplomat's Dictionary (USIP Press).

From Booklist

For the second edition of The Diplomat’s Dictionary, retired diplomat Freeman has gathered quotations from across the globe and throughout history that perhaps don’t exactly define terms but certainly give insight into what they really mean. This new edition is said to include 476 new entries, with emphasis on terms in use since 1994 (previous edition). The back of the book offers a list of persons quoted, a bibliography of the sources of the quotes, and an index. This is perhaps not an essential library purchase, but for writers of speeches and essays dealing with the topic of diplomacy, this would be a valuable desk source. It is a pleasure to dip into for whatever purpose. --Danise Hoover
