Synopsis
A revised and updated guide to records in the National Archives. Two volumes describe the nearly 1.7 million cubic feet of federal records transferred to the custody of the US Archivist as of October 1, 1994. These records are from the government's executive, legislative, and judicial branches. V.3 contains the index to these descriptions. All types of federal records textual, electronic, and audiovisual are covered. The information is organized into some 400 chapters, each of which covers the records of a major government agency. This comprehensive guide describes holdings of the Washington, D.C., area and the regional repositories of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) as of October 1, 1994. Included are records created or received by the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government. Each agency or federal entity is represented by a chapter featuring a brief administrative history, a summary description of archival holdings (e.g., textual records, microfilm publications, photos, sound recordings, and machine-readable records), quantity of holdings, and notes on subject terms and available finding aids. More detailed information about microfilm holdings is available in National Archives Microfilm Resources for Research: A Comprehensive Catalog (1996). Last year the Guide to Federal Records was distributed to selecting federal depository libraries and supersedes both the 1974 edition and its 1987 reprint. It is also available on NARA's web site at gopher://clio.nara.gov/11/inform/guide.
