This addresses A Historical Perspective on the Principles of Military Preventive Medicine, National Mobilization and Training, Preparing for Deployment, and Occupational and Environmental Issues During Sustainment. Dr. Kelley was appointed a Distinguished Fellow in Nursing and Health Studies at Fairfield University in September 2016. Immediately prior to this position he spent 13 years at the Institute of Medicine of the US National Academies where he was the Director of the Board on Global Health. His work was wide ranging encompassing global infectious disease control, violence prevention, health workforce, and federal global health policy. Prior to the National Academies, Dr. Kelley served in the US Army for more than 23 years and retired as a Colonel. Among his responsibilities, he founded and directed the DoD Global Emerging Infections Surveillance and Response System. He also founded the DoD Accession Medical Standards Analysis and Research Activity and served as the specialty editor for a landmark two volume textbook entitled: Military Preventive Medicine: Mobilization and Deployment. He authored or co-authored over 80 scholarly papers, chapters, and monographs. Dr. Kelley obtained his MD from the University of Virginia, his DrPH in epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health. Explores the various natural and manmade challenges faced by today's soldier upon mobilization and deployment. Offers comprehensive research on a range of topics related to preventive medicine, including a historic perspective on the principles of military preventive medicine, national mobilization and training, preparation for deployment, and occupational and environmental issues during sustainment. Military physicians, and medical teams may be most interested in this volume as well as soldiers and their families. The Textbooks of Military Medicine (TMM) is a series of volumes on military medicine published since 1989 by the Borden Institute, of the Office of The Surgeon General, of the United States Department of the Army. It constitutes a comprehensive, multi-volume treatise on the art and science of military medicine, as practiced by the United States armed forces. The books integrate lessons learned in past wars with current principles and practices of military medical doctrine. The spectrum of topics is broad, ranging from wound ballistics to medical ethics, and from considerations of harsh environments to applied biomedicine. The TMM series is intended to be tri-service in scope, although the majority of contributors are affiliated with the U.S. Army.
