The new edition of The Paradoxes of the American Presidency--now with three prize-winning presidential scholars: Thomas E. Cronin, Michael A. Genovese and Meena Bose--explores the complex institution of the American presidency by presenting a series of paradoxes that shape and define the office. Rewritten and updated to reflect recent political events including the presidency of Barack Obama, the 2012 and 2014 elections (with greater emphasis on the importance of the Presidential midterm election), and the primary and presidential election of 2016, this must-read fifth edition incorporates findings from the latest scholarship, recent elections and court cases, and essential survey research.

About the Author:

Thomas E. Cronin is McHugh Professor of American Institutions and Leadership at Colorado College and President Emeritus at Whitman College.

Michael A. Genovese is the Loyola Chair of Leadership Studies, Professor of Political Science, and Director of the Institute for Leadership Studies at Loyola Marymount University.

Review:

"The Paradoxes of the American Presidency is a multifaceted overview of the constitutional and contemporary presidency that includes many crucial examples of political development inside and between branches. The paradoxes approach is elegant and clear."

--Jasmine Farrier, University of Louisville

"The authors provide numerous and engaging examples from specific administrations to present their points in a way that students should be able to better understand the complex nature of executive branch politics."

--Adam L. Warber, Clemson University

"I like the text's paradox theme. It is important to present a variety of points of view and examine the contradictions inherent in U.S. government, particularly in the presidency. The writing style is excellent, neither condescendingly simplistic nor boringly pedantic, and students like it."

--Christine L. Day, University of New Orleans

"If you are looking for a comprehensive overview of the presidency, The Paradoxes of the American Presidency is really good."

--John Dickerson, Moderator of CBS' Face the Nation

"This is a thoughtful look at the American presidency and will be an excellent teaching tool at the university level and beyond."

--Howard B. Dean III, former chair of Democratic National Committee and U.S. presidential candidate

"Having served in four presidential administrations, including two tours at the highest staff level of the White House, I found this book instructive, fascinating, thought-provoking, and essential for any citizen or student of government . It is a 'must-read' for President Trump and everyone on his staff."

--Edward J. Rollins, political strategist and commentator
