Provides a practical approach to the assessment of patients with disorders of cognative function - such as memory and language impairment. Beginning with theoretical background of cognitive testing and an overview of cognitive functions, divided into those with a distributed or localized neural basis. There is a description of common neuropsychological syndromes including delirium, dementia, amnesia, aphasia, agnosia, and neglect. There have been enormous advances in this field in the last decade and the author incorporates these advances in theory and provides a practical approach to bedside cognitive testing with some tips on physical examination. There are 12 case histories to illustrate the advocated approach. Standardized mental test schedules, such as the Mini Mental State Examination, are discussed and there is an appendix which describes commonly used neuropsychological tests.

About the Author:

Professor Hodges has a particular interest in memory, language and early onset dementia syndromes. He directs the Memory and the Early Onset Dementia Clinics at Addenbrooke's Hospital and co-ordinates a multi-disciplinary research team consisting of neuropsychologists, behavioural neurologists and neuroimagers. He has authored over 300 peer reviewed papers and approximately 100 chapters and reviews. Professor Hodges has written books on transient amnesia, and cognitive assessment for clinicians, and co-authored, with Dr Berrios, a book on memory disorders and psychiatric practice. He recently edited the first textbook dedicated to early onset dementia syndromes. He was the founding co-editor of Neurocase and is now associate editor of Brain. He has also lectured extensively around the world.
Review:
In the UK core medical training, there is virtually no mention of cognitive neurology. It hardly appears in the MRCP(UK) either. This is staggering given the increasing prevalence and dementia of dementia, worldwide and specifically in the UK. Prof. Hodges' brief guide will therefore be enormously useful to junior physicians who wish to have a sound overview of the cognitive assessment, written by one of the most well respected experts in the world. Unlike other guides, it is written in easily accessible language, and does not have an undue emphasis on mnemonic functions subserved by the medial temporal lobe (notwithstanding the incredible importance of Alzheimer's disease in this area). This guide is a joy to read, and will also be of use to other health professionals. * Amazon Customer Reviews, * This is an excellent introduction to cognitive assessment for clinicians who need more than the rudimentary tests they apply, to understand the underlying principles and disorders which affect cognitive functions and to have a working knowledge of more specialist tests that specialists like clinical psychologists use. An essential read for anyone working in geriatric medicine or old age psychiatry or neuropsychiatry. * Amazon Customer Reviews, * This is an excellent book, bringing the experience of a specialist clinician, and a little of the mystery of the neuropsychological assessment into the reach of general clinicians with an interest in cognitive assessment. It has useful practical advice, and I particularly found the illustrative cases helpful. Highly recommended. * Amazon Customer Reviews, *
