Synopsis
This book deals with child abuse and neglect as it presents itself in primary care. All health professionals, including those who work in primary care, have an important role to play in the child protection process. Inappropriate management of suspected instances of child abuse may result in serious implications for the child , family and involved professionals. Primary health care teams have specific and unmet training needs in this area and many general practitioners express anxiety regarding their involvement in child protection of children from the treat of abuse or neglect. Readers are made aware of the skills required both to protect children from the threat of abuse or neglect. Readers are made aware of the skills required both to protect children and to subsequently maintain relationships with families. The contents have been extended to include child protection issues in our multi-cultural society along with comparison of different system across Europe. The book is primarily aimed at GPs and their teams; social workers and health care managers will also benefit from its unique treatment of child protection issues in a primary care setting.

Michael Bannon is a Consultant Paediatrician, Northwick Park Hospital and Associate Dean in Postgraduate Medicine, London Deanery. Yvonne Carter is in the Department of General Practice and Primary Care, Barts and The London Queen Mary's School of Medicine and Dentistry, London.

An excellent book that merits careful study... this is a well-written, clear and readable text that covers its subject well and would make an excellent reference text. * Family Practice * This is an extremely useful and informative book that I really enjoyed reading. It is written in a very readable and accessible way; the individual chapters are short, succinct and well written, each by different authors with different perspectives but combining into a cohesive whole . . . this is an excellent book that provides much in the way of good advice and good ideas not only for GPs and other members of primary care teams but also for other health and social care professionals who need an insight into the contribution of primary care to child protection.
