Kindergarten-Grade 3 This legend traces the True Cross back to the Garden of Eden, when Adam's son Seth placed a sprig from the Tree of Life in his father's mouth after Adam's death. The tree that grew was later worshipped by the Queen of Sheba; the wood was also used for the cross on which Jesus was crucified. Much later, a temple on Calvary was torn down to reach the cross, which was distinguished from the two others buried with it when its touch brought a dead man back to life. The text is short and crisply written, which well suits the legend. However, the story assumes that children are familiar with the Biblical figures mentioned. There are no sources cited, nor is there sufficient background information. The illustrations are rich with color and pattern that effectively sustains the mood. This expressionistic style suits the direct understated text. Jane E. Gardner Connor, South Carolina State Library, Columbia
