About the Author

James Riordan's first novel, Sweet Clarinet, was shortlisted for the Whitbread Children's Novel Award in 1998.

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2 There's absolutely nothing wrong with this book except that it's not Muller and Loriot's recent version (Knopf, 1986). Riordan's text is a lively but faithful rendering of the original, and Ambrus provides cheery, cartoon-like sketches in color and line against a white background. Peter is chubby and simple-seeming, and Grandfather and the hunters are larger but look no brighter. The four animals run an anthropomorphic scale from the realistic fowl to a Garfield-like cat and a cross-eyed wolf (wearing an earring). The light-hearted atmosphere extends to an Epilogue that suggests the duck may be surgically saved from the wolf, and the wolf possibly saved from the zoo. But the format, language, and art of the Knopf edition simply make this one look tame and predictable by comparison, and Muller's many frames make following the Prokofiev score a lot less tedious.
